A selection of Cliffton's unpublished works. Includes several obituaries, pastoral poems and odes on the deaths of Samuel Hollowell, Dr. (Matthew) Clarkson, William Waring; prose essays on painting, "Ideas," innate principles, etc. Some of the fragments at the end of the volume may have appeared in revised form in the Fenno (New York, 1800) edition of Cliffton's works.

Matthew Clarkson (born April 1733, New York City-died October 5, 1800, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), was a Delegate from Pennsylvania. He was born in New York City, but moved to Philadelphia where he was justice of the Court of Common Pleas, Quarter Sessions of the Peace, and of the Philadelphia Orphans' Court in 1771 and 1772. He was elected to the Continental Congress in 1785, but did not serve. He was a member of the Board of Aldermen in 1789, then mayor of Philadelphia 1792-1796. He died in ...

William Cliffton was an American poet, best known for his satirical verse. Cliffton was born in Philadelphia to Quaker parents, and poor health restricted his movements to such an extent that he seldom if ever left the city. He developed talents in music and verse, and became known for his political satires. After his premature death, several notebooks of lyric poetry were found and published.
